Six Golds in a Day: Boxers, a Wrestler and the Women's Hockey Team Take India to Fifth

India won six gold medals on Friday at the Asian Games, taking the country from 10 golds to 16 and up to fifth on the medal table. Three came in boxing, one in wrestling, one in women's recurve archery and one in women's hockey, alongside two silvers and two bronzes.

The women's hockey team beat China 1-0 in the final, Lalremsiami scoring in the 10th minute and India holding on from there. They finished the tournament with seven wins from seven, scoring 69 goals and conceding three. The gold also carries a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Boxing produced three titles. Parveen Hooda took the women's 65 kg gold in a 3-2 verdict over Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-chin, Lovlina Borgohain won the women's 75 kg final against China's Bao Ziyi, and Ankush Panghal beat South Korea's Kim Min-seong for the men's 80 kg title. With bronzes from Priya Ghanghas (60 kg), Kapil Pokhariya (90 kg) and Narender Berwal (+90 kg), India's boxing haul stands at three golds and three bronzes.

In wrestling, Sujeet Kalkal won the men's freestyle 65 kg final 10-9 against Tajikistan's Abdulmazhid Kudiev. He opened with a 13-3 win over Afghanistan's Sayed Omar Zazai and a 10-0 win over Iran's Abbas Ebrahimzadehsavadkouhi, then got past Japan's Kotaro Kiyooka 3-3 on criteria before the final.

The archery gold came from Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod, who beat South Korea in the women's team recurve final. Mohod added a silver in the mixed team recurve with Dhiraj Bommadevara, while the men's recurve team of Bommadevara, Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhoge also took silver. The other medals of the day were bronzes for Nethra Kumanan in sailing's women's ILCA 6 and for the men's sepak takraw quadrant team.

India now have 16 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze, 76 medals in total.
