Australia were 187/6 when bad light ended play early on the first day of the opening Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban on Friday. Australia chose to bat after winning the toss, and 65.2 overs were bowled.
Matt Renshaw is unbeaten on 46 off 115 balls and Pat Cummins on 33 off 72, and the pair have kept Australia going after the top order fell. Australia also picked up 19 extras, 14 of them leg byes. South Africa's three seamers took two wickets each.
Marco Jansen had Nic Maddinson bowled for a duck off 33 balls and later had Steve Smith caught by Wiaan Mulder for 25. Mulder removed Travis Head for 9 and trapped Marnus Labuschagne lbw for 37, an innings of six fours from 58 balls. Anrich Nortje took the wickets of Alex Carey for 14 and Beau Webster for 4.
The South Africa attack was tight. Jansen finished with 2 for 35 from 16 overs, 7 of them maidens, Mulder 2 for 31 from 15 and Nortje 2 for 40 from 13.2. Simon Harmer bowled 14 overs for 34 and Keshav Maharaj 7 overs for 33, neither taking a wicket.
Day 2 starts at 9:30 AM local time, 1:00 PM IST. South Africa will want the last four Australian wickets quickly, while Renshaw and Cummins will try to build on 187. The second Test is at St George's Park in Gqeberha from 18 October.
