Kohli's 139*, Gill's 110 Power India to an 8-Wicket Win Over West Indies

India chased down 296 with 50 balls to spare in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday, winning by 8 wickets in Thiruvananthapuram on the back of centuries from Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.

West Indies had put up a fight first. Justin Greaves made 101, John Campbell 62 and Amir Jangoo an unbeaten 58 to get them to 295 for 7 in their 50 overs. Kuldeep Yadav, back in the ODI side, was the one bowler India couldn't afford to be without — 4 for 40 in his 10 overs, including Campbell's wicket and Greaves' late in his innings, earned him the player-of-the-match award.

Rohit Sharma got India away to a brisk start, 32 off 35 balls in an opening stand of 74 before he was out. That brought Kohli in to join his captain, and the pair added 151 for the second wicket. Gill went to his century off 108 balls before falling for 110 with India already close to the line at 225 for 2.

Kohli finished the match unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls, with 9 sixes and 10 fours — the most sixes he's hit in a single ODI innings. It was his 86th century in international cricket across all formats, his 55th in ODIs, and his tenth against West Indies specifically. He also passed 15,000 ODI runs during the innings, becoming only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach that mark — and doing it in 303 innings to Tendulkar's 377.

The series continues with the second ODI in Guwahati on 30 September and the third in Mullanpur on 3 October.
