The IPL Auction Is Coming Back to India for the First Time Since 2022

The IPL 2027 player auction will be held in Goa this December, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed — the first time the auction has been held on Indian soil since Kochi in December 2022. The three editions in between were all held abroad: Dubai for 2024, Jeddah for 2025, Abu Dhabi for 2026.

"This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations — Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi — we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December," Saikia said. The exact dates haven't been formally announced, but IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has pointed to a window around 14-16 December, with the 15th and 16th seen as the most likely two days.

It's a mini-auction rather than a full mega auction, which was always the plan — 2027 is the last year of the current three-year regulatory cycle that started in 2025, and mini-auctions are scheduled for the years in between mega resets. The salary cap keeps climbing through that cycle too: ₹146 crore in 2025, ₹151 crore in 2026, and ₹157 crore for 2027.

No team has released an official retention or release list yet, and BCCI hasn't set a deadline for one either — going by past cycles, that's usually announced three to four weeks out, so expect it in mid-to-late November alongside the confirmed auction dates. Plenty of speculation is already circulating about who could hit the market, but none of it is confirmed by any franchise yet.

The timing lines up with something else: 2027 is the IPL's 20th season, which BCCI is expected to mark in a bigger way than usual — though nobody has officially tied the Goa venue to that celebration just yet.
